Description:

Chembra Peak:

is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2050m ASL. Chembra is located near the town of Meppady. It is part of the Wayanad hill ranges in Western Ghats, adjoining the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and Vellarimala in Kozhikode district in Kerala. Chembra Peak is accessible by foot from Meppady.

A heart shaped lake on the way to the top of the peak is a major tourist attraction. We found the lake halfway to the peak. Prior permission from Meppady forest office is required but the forest guards near heart-shaped lake didn’t allowed us to hike to the peak. Naxalite problem was the reason blurted out. It’s very disheartening that we ended up trekking half the distance & height.

Number of Permissions given during weekend will be so high that you’ll end up marching like ants till the lake. During rainy season, trail gets so slippery that you must follow your lead at a safe distance.

Tadiyandamol:

is the highest mountain of Kodagu district & is the third highest peak in Karnataka. It is located Western Ghats range, and reaches an elevation of 1748 m ASL. The mountain has patches of shola forests in the valleys.

The Nalaknad palace at the foothills is an important historical landmark & history of Dodda Veerarajendra, Kodagu princess is quite interesting. Trekking Tadiyandamol for the second time was awesome experience as it rained continuously & trail seemed like a path through streams & waterfalls. Mispredicting weather was a serious mistake. Temperature hopping down 6°C from base to peak, wind speed of 10km/hr & heavy rain was so much for us to bear as we had dumped our raincoats & jackets in our vehicle. Pork at a local homestay was truely awesome & a taste to remember for many years!!

Edakkal Caves:

Edakkal caves are two caves located at Edakkal, 25km from kalpetta. Exact location is 11°37′28.81″N 76°14′8.88″E. They lie 1200m above MSL on Ambukutty Mala beside an ancient trade route connecting Mysore and Malabar coast. We climbed this 1200m hill of 1.8 km in a total time of 1:09:00, moving time being 00:41:56. Max speed recorded was 5.38 km/h, Average is 1.55km/h, average moving speed of 2.58km/h.
