Western Ghats Cycling and Treks

Awesome trip to Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. Team Size: 13
We combined Cycling and Trek together during the trip. Lata Murli, Thara, Shruti Naik, Sangeetha Shameem, Srinivas Patibandla opting to trek. And Gandharva Shetty, Murugappan, Lalit Narayan, Gurucharan, Vireshwar Dixit, Mayank Singh, Sujeeth Monu, Suneeth Sonu decided to do cycling. Thanks everyone for joining us and making this an unforgettable trip.

The ride was challenging on the first day, we covered 50+ kms with elevation gain being around 1100m. Road is patchy and not in great condition making it much more difficult. Thanks to driver of our support vehicle, we couldn’t carry extra water and snacks. Only few shops along the entire route where you get something to eat. Mayank Singh captured videos on gopro during the journey and Gandharva Shetty’s energy levels were insanely ‘high’. Gurucharan helped coordinate between the group and ensured no one is left behind.

Second day’s ride to Kollur was mostly downhill and route passes through Mookambika wildlife sanctuary. Few streams and falls along the route.

Meanwhile, the trek group spent an entire day at Bheemeshwara waterfalls on the first day. And on second day I accompanied them to Hidlumane waterfalls, which cascades in 6-7 steps. The trek distance to the waterfalls is 6.4 km with elevation gain of 286 m. Leech infested during this time of the year.

BBQ was arranged during the trip and Shruti Naik, Sangeetha Shameem helped us cook. Lalit Narayan came up with Chicken recipe and it was delicious.

Kudremukh Trek

Team Size: 23
It was a memorable trip to Kudremukh Forests again for the second time and this time we did Kudremukh Trek. Our first visit here was in summer to Bavikonda Peak. The transformation of the forests due to monsoon was clear. Unique landscape when compared with other trails in Karnataka. Very Rich in Flora and Fauna.
Camaraderie that developed in this group was amazing. Thanks to all these wonderful people for joining us.
Satish Sats volunteered for the trip. Thanks to Praveen Kumar, Shreyas Hebbar, Sagar Iyer for helping us Pitch tents, Pack and consolidate Camping gear. Cycling to Pyramid Valley

Ride to Pyramid Valley:

Team Size: 4; Shubha, Mayank Singh, Suneeth Sonu and one more.

We rode to Pyramid valley starting from Adventure Junkie – Silk board – Kanakpura road covering a distance of 43.9 Km. More stats available here https://www.strava.com/activities/1165442116

We took the Thottikallu Falls – Bannerghatta – Electronic City road. Forest road cuts through the Bannerghatta National Park, Greenery and uphill with elevation gain of 502 m. Dog breeding and training centre of CRPF nestled somewhere along the route. And a lot of things happened. Broke my mobile screen, missed spotting an elephant crossing the road at Bhuthanahalli forest area, a fall on the busy Hosur road. SOHAM Cycling

Mix and Match… Not dress but to Start both!!

Sit Spine erect, close your eyes, do nothing/do only one thing.

Every gurus and babajis tell the same simple way of meditation with few add-ons. But even though they seem simple and easy on the paper, It is very difficult for most of us who want to do nothing or to do only one thing – breath.

Awareness on breath is easy during deeper/faster breaths but even then we tend to lose concentration or when somebody suffocates us.

Solution to this is SOHAM.

Wondering if this one is another simple way? No. It is not.

  • When you Inhale – Sounds “SO”.
  • When you Exhale – Sounds “HAM”. — Try It.

It is not difficult because here it comes with a twist beyond many mind’s imagination….

  1. You’ll not sit with spine erect.
  2. No closed eyes.
  3. Do everything you normally do.

CYCLING, at least best with cycling because breaths will not be lazy ones to forget them. May be this one is Dynamic Meditation. Oh yes, You are MOVING while MEDITATING!. Definitely either deeper / faster breaths while cycling and more easier to concentrate upon.

And also, Cycling is enjoyable only when you forget paining bums and to divert your mind away from it – SOHAM.

5Km X 10days Run Challenge

What a Revelation it has been, truly awakening! And when you are awakening you break through lies. All these 10 days during the challenge, I was blissed out. Every run gave me simple joy and immense satisfaction.

The 10 days that I am talking is about a running challenge. I don’t have a clue what I was thinking when I decided to do this challenge. It just happened! There was no second thought, had it been then probably I would have never attempted. I must admit, this required a certain level of commitment and dedication.

It would have been lot easier if it was for ‘once in a blue moon’ long run that I usually do but the challenge here in this case was to run 5km for 10 consecutive days. And exactly this brought in a lot of discipline, unwavering focus to finish the job.

I got to understand that mind plays along with pretexts – you took a decision without thinking, you are lean already don’t do it and all kind of such nonsense. I realised that mind doesn’t want to get out of comfort zone. And within few days, It was clear to me that I have to first complete the run in my head and then on the trail. So it’s true and now I know that If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.

These runs have transformed my Sleeping time, Diet preferences. There is no snooze button in my alarm, I am lot more confident in everything that I do. I can go on with the list. If at all this is runner’s high then certainly this is ‘miles’ ahead of any other ‘high’ that I ever had:)

This one sums up all my thoughts
“You might win some, you might lose some. But you go in, you challenge yourself, you become a better man, a better individual, a better fighter”.

I would like to thank Niharika for introducing me to running and paticularly to this challenge. Without her support and motivation this could have got difficult to complete. And thanks to my Family for letting me be and do what I was doing.

 

Day 1, Hated running laps on the same route and decided never to do it again.

Day 3, slow run.

 

Day 4, To lake view point and forgetting exit gate to realise after running a km.

 

Day 5, Running with Mongoose and Rabbits

 

Day 6, Challenge within a challenge. Get pace below 6 and I did it:)

 

Day 7, Kundavada circuit. All time 4th for the route even after running extra to the view point at the centre of lake:)

 

Day 8, was disappointed that my pace dropped below 6 min benchmark that I had set.

 

Day 9, Second run on the same route and since i knew the elevation it helped me to increase pace where needed and conserve energy.

 

Day 10, Fastest ever, Mad rush!

Ride to Chikka Tirupati

Cycling distance: 62 Kms
Team Size: 12
Avg Speed: 19 km/hr

We completed the ride with no breaks except for breakfast at Chikka Tirupathi.

Baamikonda Trek

Baamikonda Peak is in Kudremukh mountain range. Our visit was about 7 months back. Team Size around 20. Trek was short and easy except few of us took detour and climbed a heap of black rock structure to reach the peak.  And it was awesome. We visited Eleneer waterfalls and Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple as well the following day. Accommodation was in tents. #waterfalls #Campfire #MeruScreening;)

Kayaking River Shambhavi

Team size: 12

Difficulty: Easy but very hard against the tide.

River Shambhavi starts from Western Ghats and meets the Arabian Sea. River hardly touches any town or city. Away from population, River Shambhavi is known for its natural beauty.
Surrounded by dense trees, the river is the perfect gateway to nature.
We also get to see lots of Indian and foreign birds in the river.
It is one and half day long journey. Total distance is 30 km (including both ways).

It was an amazing experience to kayak 30 km in 2 days. Estuary is a good place to experience strong tides and shallow river waters. Barbecue on the banks of the river is Unforgettable. We were hosted by a family that stayed close to a dam. We had expected Mangalore brown rice for lunch but thinking we won’t like it, they prepared normal rice what we get in Bangalore. Immense respect for their hospitality.

Few of us delayed returning to starting point as we went to the family which hosted us to get raw tobacco as beedi making was their occupation and time spent was more than 40min and by the time we started our journey, tide was against us which delayed us by another 1hr 20min

Kayaking Basic Course

It’s awesome feeling to introduce more people to kayaking. We conducted Basic Course in Kayaking at Bengaluru. We all did swimming followed by a delicious lunch. Taste of Chicken dry was awesome. 

Few participants were there for recreation and few to learn Kayaking to take it to next level and they learnt

  • Getting in from a dock
  • Getting in from a shore
  • Keeping balance
  • Paddling gear and kayak parts
  • Paddling technique
  • Paddle as Stern Rudder
  • Forward and Reverse sweep strokes
  • Carving turns
  • Moving sideways with sculling draw
  • Safe Kayaking

KumaraParvatha Trek G-17

Group Size: 17

Trek Difficulty: Hard

Date: 25th & 26th Feb-17

Stay: Camping in tents near checkpoint (View point-2).

Peaks hiked: Battadagudda, Sheshaparvatha, KumaraParvatha.

Hosted@Bhattara Mane. Always crowded, very basic food yet very tasty. Butter Milk is not something you would like to miss here. Talk to Girigadde Bhattru when he is completely free from hosting his guests.

Creepy night trek: While coming back due to ankle injury to one of our friend and having very few torches for a group of 5 slowed us down even more and had to night trek for 3.5hrs. Wonderful evacuation like experience and Vaibhav, Climbing mate helped us immensely in the entire incident.
